SEA KAYAKING
Itinerary from Marciana
Marina to Cape St. Andrea.
Departure:
The departure point is the beach of the "Fenicia"
(Phoenix) at the outer side of the base of the seawall jetty which
encloses the marina of Marciana. The beach is characterised by large,
smooth stones and, on the left, by rocks and cliffs that are easily
reached. Bathing house facilities are also offered alongside the
other services offered by the town's many shops and cafe's which
border the shore. The beach can be reached by car following the
shoreline road up to the Pisan Tower. The car can be parked in the
port area or in the immediate vicinity.
Itinerary: from the beach of the "Fenicia", follow the coast
going west for about one mile until you reach a small inlet called
the "Caletta" where you will find a small stony beach. Continuing
on towards the west, one arrives at the "Cala", a delightful inlet
protected from winds framed by rich vegetation which is reflected
in the crystal-clear waters.
Keeping a westerly course, the landscape is characterised by dense
vegetation, steep cliffs and tiny beaches, deserted even in the
high season due to the difficulty in reaching them. After about
four miles, you can land on the beach in Cape St. Andrea.
Leave your kayaks
on the beach where you can get a snack at one of the small cafes
in the area. Before facing the return trip, don't forget to follow
the coast yet again westward as far as the lighthouse at Point Polveraia
(three miles from Cape St. Andrea) where you will see one of the
most beautiful coastlines of the island. On clear days, you can
see Corsica from this point. Along this coastline, still quite wild,
enthusiasts of underwater activities can really enjoy themselves.
The depths offer fantastic colours and even a number of surprises
including remains of ancient ships from various origins and time
periods which sunk along with the treasures they carried.
Climbing and
kayaking on the Island of Elba
The Hotel Ilio, in Capo S. Andrea, offers kayaking and free-climbing
in a natural paradise
