SEA WATCHING
Sea
watching represents a fine opportunity for changing a typical
"sun and umbrella" seaside holiday into an extraordinary experience.
Snorkelling is both economical and relaxing. Moving along the water's
surface or just a few metres under, take a look at an unusual world
capable of transmitting great enthusiasm. Often, this enthusiasm
is transformed into passion leading the snorkelling buff into a
more complex underwater world. Thanks to the numerous, well-equipped
diving
schools on Elba, access to the hidden gardens of the sea is made
possible.
WHAT YOU NEED
Mask: transparent silicon masks let in more light and allow
a better field of vision. Check for good adherence to your face
so that water does not leak in. Snorkel: choose a snorkel with a
mouthpiece whose size and texture will not bother your mouth. The
tube must guarantee correct breathing. Fins: regular swimming fins
are preferable to specific diving fins as they are softer and lighter.
Wet suit: a light, rubber wet suit which will keep you warm will
also protect you from scrapes and sun exposure. New Lycra wet suits
are an interesting alternative. Underwater cameras are an excellent
idea to make your experience unforgettable. A variety of models
are on the market ranging in quality and price.
HOW TO BEHAVE
Once you reach the spot chosen, get information from a local
diving source as to where the best places are for snorkelling. Ask
about particular precautions to take including those relative to
weather or seasonal conditions. Move carefully and slowly; avoid
making noise that could scare the fish. Avoid touching what you
see, use your eyes instead of your hands and take only photos as
souvenirs. Remember that objects seem larger and closer by 25% under
water, and colours are absorbed gradually as the depth increases.
WITH A BOAT
If you travel in open waters with a small boat, remember to
wear a life jacket and respect the safety regulations.
