HOTEL ILIO LAUNCHES SHIPWRECK SNORKELLING

Hotel Ilio is introducing two new snorkelling excursions for its summer guests.

The first involves a 15-minute journey by motorboat to the wreck of the merchant ship Elviscott which sank in 1972 and lies in clear, shallow waters off Pomonte on Elba’s southwest coast. Guests can snorkel around the wreck which lies broken in two although its bridge and engine room remain intact.

On the way back there is a further opportunity for snorkelling amid the sponges and corals off the Formiche di Zanca islands, barely one kilometre from the hotel. The twice-weekly, three-hour excursion costs €25 including transport and equipment.

Also operating twice a week from June until the end of September is a six-hour excursion to the island of Capraia, 45 minutes by motorboat from Sant’Andrea and famous for its now abandoned high-security prison.

For €30 per person, guests can combine snorkelling with a visit to the island’s Old Town area for shopping and lunch (cost not included); or those suitably qualified can opt to go diving off in an area just off the island which is teeming with sealife. The cost of two dives plus equipment and transport is €95.
